Maybe its because its January, and as a general rule in this month you want to change things, be they your diet, your wardrobe, your fitness level or your interiors, I have opted for the latter (although I am trying the fitness one too .. but thats not such a quick fix unfortunately) so after a little consideration I decided that I no longer wanted the sitting room painted in only white, so took the plunge and decided to paint just the one wall. I wanted to go fairly bold so went for Slate Grey by Homebase, I think at first the kids and Mr W were slightly unsure of my decision, but I knew it would look brilliant .. which of course it does, but what I didn’t realise was how much of a difference it would make to whole feel of the room. Our sitting room / dinning room is not the biggest .. but its still a nice size, but just a change in this one wall has made our room feel warm and so much more homely.
Of course it goes without saying that once a wall (or room) has been painted you need to have a good faff styling the room afterwards & that’s exactly what I did, its in the small details.
So I thought I’d show you some of the small details I love in my sitting room & how I have styled them.
Wicker baskets are always on my lust list which are always good for storing anything from throws to cake plates & bowls, and are easy to add a bit of colour to by using chalk paint.
I love to have a bit of greenery it softens corners (or hides plug sockets), and when the light streams through creates the most wonderful shadows, the one major thing I have learnt though .. they need water in order to survive (spot the brown leaves!)
I also love having photos and prints scattered about the room, some on the walls and others either on shelves or propped up against a wall on the floor.
Another necessity in my home is candles, scented or non-scented, on dark wintery days they make the room feel warm with their flickering glow and smell amazing should they be scented.
Lastly and by no means least flowers, an essential in my home, bringing a smattering of colour and a little bit of happiness, because lets be honest who doesn’t love flowers be they the real deal or a good faux .. they always bring a smile to your face.
I am really pleased with how our room looks now & you’ll be pleased to know so are the kids & Mr W (though I didn’t quite say “I told you so” .. but was tempted). I hope you’ve enjoyed reading and seeing all the small details I’ve added.
Niki xx
